Why was the INTERPOL established?
It was established to enhance international police cooperation in order to combat organized crime. As a result of modern technology , The world has become a small village, and crimes turned to be transnational. Consequently, the world became in dire need of international police cooperation.
What is the role of INTERPOL?
The INTERPOL enhances international police Cooperation. In other words, it assists the police in various countries to combat criminality. Due to its non-biased role, the INTERPOL is banned from interference in any political, military, religious or ethnic activities. It is concerned with combating terrorism, drugs, weapons smuggling and trafficking, money laundering and financial crimes committed out of modern technologies and due to corruption.
The INTERPOL works 24/7 in four official languages (Spanish-English-Arabic- French). It receives criminal information from the member states to be saved, analyzed & circulated among all countries. The INTERPOL Secretary plays an essential role regarding information exchange through encouraging the member states to use the communication system 24/7. This system enables its users to search the information saved in the central database in Leon.
Who funds the INTERPOL?
The INTERPOL is funded by annual contributions from member states determined according to their contributions to the UN. The INTERPOL annual budget is about 40 Million Euros.
The INTERPOL Management
• The Executive committee oversees resolutions of the General Assembly that includes 13 members (a chairman- 3 deputies- 8 members) besides the secretary general as an ex-officio member. These members are elected with regard to geographical distribution. The Chairman is elected for four years while deputies and members are elected for three years.
• The General Secretariat is composed of departments that include employees from countries all over the world chaired by the Secretary General as he holds the highest executive position. The Executive Committee nominates the Secretary General to be elected for a term of five renewable years by the majority of two-thirds of General Assembly votes. He assumes Management responsibility of the General Secretariat including daily police international cooperation. In addition, he is assigned to implement the General Assembly and The Executive Committee resolutions.
